Back/forward cache (or bfcache) is an in-memory cache that stores pages that customers have recently viewed. When a customer clicks the ‘back’ or ‘forward’ buttons in a browser, the cached version of the page they have already visited is displayed. No reloads or responses from the server – the page is loaded immediately.
How does it work in Magento 2?
Even though such cache is already supported by multiple browsers, including Chrome, it is not compatible with Magento by default. Back Forward Cache for Magento 2 extension adds the approved by Google script to your website which lets you use the bfcache technique on Magento instances.

By clicking ‘back’ or ‘forward’, a customer initiates page reloading. It means that a browser sends a new request to a server and waits for the response. The server, in its turn, re-downloads, re-parses and re-executes all resources it has already downloaded, significantly increasing content delivery time.

The Magento 2 page that has already been loaded is saved in memory, and the browser just restores it without the network at all. The page is displayed instantly without the need to wait for a server response, reducing the load on the server.
